I've been passionate about parrots since 1998 and have weathered tornado and fire fears. In my younger years I thought that nothing horrible would ever happen in my community.  But, first there was the Oklahoma City Bombings, just 2 1/2 hrs from my home.  Then, the horrible days following 9-11, followed by Tsunami's, earthquakes, hurricane's and fires.

Keep in mind, that shelters are familiar with more common pets like dogs and cats, but parrot evacuation may present some special planning in a situation where many people must temporarily group together in a crisis. 

Firstly, you've probably noticed that your friends are either fascinated or fearful of your parrot.  So is the community as a whole.  You'll need a sturdy bird carrier that will not only help your parrot feel safe, but insure that your pet bird is adequately contained yet fed, should you have to spend a few days in a shelter or hotel. Secondly, since parrots are animals of prey, most parrots, especially home bound birds, will be scared to death in an evacuation experience.  Your intuitive pet bird will feel your anxiety as well as the anxiety of everyone around you.  New noises, barking dogs, living in survival mode will take it's toll on all of you.  Your parrots entire sense of safety will be turned up side down which will cause parrot behavioral issues for years to come.  YOU must insure that your life long companion parrot bird experiences minimal trauma because parrots bond for life!  The extreme fear may make you explore re-homing your pet bird. Plan ahead to minimize long term post-traumatic stress problems.
