Causes of Feather Plucking in Parrots

Infectious - bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic

Allergic - food, cooking fumes, tobacco smoke, skin irritations

Endocrine - hypothyroid (decreased levels of thyroid hormones), hyperadrenocorticism (increased levels of adrenal hormones), testosterone responsive baldness

Toxic &/or drug related - arsenic, cigarette smoke, nicotine on human hands, praziquantel, fenbendazole

Parasites - i.e. Giardia

Neoplastic - cancers, lipoma

Environmental - low humidity, lack of bird lights, small cage, overcrowding, dominance, change, inability to bathe

Dietary Deficiencies

Behavioral - boredom, frustration, breeding behavior, stress, attention-getting, anxiety, lack of sleep.

Trauma - broken blood feather or improper wing trim
