Macaw & Cockatoo Proof Bird Carriers
Large birds, like Macaw's and Cockatoo's have extremely strong beaks that they can use to break out of a bird travel carrier, especially when they are not used to travel. If you want to take your bird on trips, it is best to condition it to the bird travel carrier.
Even so, these large parrots need an extra sturdy bird carrier that deters chewing by having properly sized ventilation holes that don't allow them to chew a hole through the bird carrier. Once a hole is started, it grows! You can adapt a bird travel carrier with strong stainless steel wire mesh over the ventilation holes to minimize the possibility that your bird will start an escape by leveraging its beak on ventilation holes.
On the same token, bird travel carriers that offer thick, hard plastic with small ventilation holes that can't be chewed through are a specialty item. Only a few companies make safe, reliable bird travel carriers for Cockatoo's and Macaw's. It's a good investment for safe travel or evacuation of your precious pet, though, and we highly recommend buy one.
For car travel, choose your large bird carrier based on your travel needs, ventilation requirements and vehicle size. For car travel, make sure that the dimensions of the bird travel carrier will fit inside of your car's back seat. Keep in mind that if you are traveling by car, a bird travel carrier can get hot quickly in the sun shine or if you leave the car in warm weather to eat with the bird inside. Consider a bird travel cage such as the Aluminum Bird Travel Cage or our Fold Away Bird Travel Cages for car travel.
In terms of airline travel with Macaw's and Cockatoo's, most airlines abide by IATA (International Association of Transportation of Animals) criteria - so be sure to check with your airline for their specifications prior to purchasing a Macaw Carrier or Cockatoo Carrier. These bird carriers may need to be adapted with stainless steel wire mesh to insure that your parrot can't start hewing through the ventilation holes and ultimately chew a hole big enought to escape.
