Eclectus Parrots require specialty eclectus food diets. Originating from Australia, Eclectus parrots have a digestive system that is unique from other parrot species. Electus parrots, like most birds, rely on slight body weight inorder to take flight. Their body compensates for weight requirements with a unique bone structure, a circulatory system that requires minimal blood, and a digestive system which allows them to process food faster.
Eclectus parrots have relatively longer digestive tracts, compared to parrots, which causes them to absorb more vitamins, minerals and food elements than other parrot species, like African Grey Parrots, Macaw's and Cockatoo's. This makes them prone to vitamin and additive toxicity. Bird food that is vitamin fortified, has artifical colors and preservatives is not appropriate Eclectus food. These bird foods cause toxicity in the Eclectus parrot. Eclectus parrots require a specialized Eclectus Food for optimum health.
Significant vitamin and bird food additive sensitivity in Eclectus Parrots results in vitamin and chemical overdose. The symptoms of vitamin and additive toxicity include feather discoloration, skin sensitivity, feather destructive behaviors and nuerological problems such as tics in the form of toe tapping, anxiety, screaming, and even sudden death. Prevent these problems with specialty eclectus food.
