Canary Cages
Your pet canary's cage is it's entire world, so make sure that it is roomy, canary friendly and safe. Your canary needs exercise to remain healthy and vibrant enough to sing. A large canary cage with 1/2" bar space promotes exercise and a sense of well-being. Flight cages are the best choice for canaries and finches since they like to fly back and forth versus up and down. The longer the bird cage the better. A MINIMUM size for one canary is 18”W x 18”H x 18” D but again, larger size (not bar space) is better to insure that your canary gets proper exercise.
Like all birds, canaries are skittish as a self preservation need. Wild canaries are food to many species in their native environment. Your canary must feel safe in it's home if it is going to produce canary songs. Place your canaries cage against a wall or in a corner to enhance the feeling of safety. Provide several appropriately sized bird perches in the canary cage. Our favorite bird perch is the Multi-branched Manzanita Perch. It offers small yet variable sized branches to exercise tender canary feet. Many canaries enjoy Small Bird Bungees since they offer a natural swaying area to perch and promote climbing and exercise
Canaries also enjoy preening and chewing natural fibers such as coconut or cotton. They appreciate a few, safe small bird toys.
The your canary cage at least once a week, more frequently if you have the time. Food, water splatters and fecal matter allow bacteria to build up, making your canary ill. Use Pet Focus or AviClean Spray to clean the bird cage. This no rinse formula disolves debris and wipes clean. Most soiled perches can be sprayed with Pet Focus or AviClean as well. If bird toys become soiled please dispose of them and purchase new ones.
We recommend lining the bottom of the bird cage with non-absorbant, waxed cage liners. Even so, you'll still need to soak and disinfect the bird cage tray when it becomes soiled. When carrying out the cleaning chores, the perches in the cage should be cleaned as well, as they can become soiled from the bird wiping their beaks on them.
Keeping your Canary Cage clean and safe will help promote years of companionship and beautiful canary songs.
