Canary Singing: Canary Care for Beautiful Canary Songs

Canary Singing: Canary Care for Beautiful Canary Songs

Canary Singing Tips

Singing Canary

1. Canaries must have basic needs met to produce canary songs, including:

  • Fresh water
  • Healthy, Fresh Canary Seed or more importantly, complete pellets such as Harrison's Bird Foods Fine
  • Roomy, clean cage placed high and in a draft-free location
  • Proper lighting, 10 - 12 hrs. a day of sleep. Appropriate amount of light commensurate with the season
  • Health care and canary wise grooming
  • Never trim you Canaries wings
  • Singly kept bird
  • Keep in mind that canaries need to experience seasonal changes.  They sing best during the Spring or breeding season.

2. Create pleasurable experiences that promote canary singing, such as:

  • Provide your canary with nutritional treats including Eggfood and greens
  • Canaries housed in a large flight cage will feel more prone to sing.
  • Create a gentle, calm environment and talk soothingly to your canary each day.
  • Play Canary Singing CD's

3. While Canary Singing is a form of communication with a potential mate, male canaries appreciate interacting with you, too. Try:

  • Speaking with soft words in an animated or song-like voice.
  • Use slow body movements when near your canary cage to make it feel safe.
  • Whistling tunes you hear on Canary Singing CD's

4.  Newly acquired canaries

need to become familiar and feel safe in their new cage before they will start singing.  While a few canaries may sing immediately, it is not unusual for it to take two weeks for a canary to adjust to a new home and canary cage.

5.  Age matters:

Canary singing is a mating call.  The optimum age for males to call their mates is between 6 months and 3 years.

healthy birds sing canary songsIt is not unusual to acquire a female or hen canary.  Some young canary hens initially engage in singing but they usually stop after their first baby molt.  Other canary hens sing sporadically throughout the year, but they don't have the daily or lengthy singing sessions that male canaries provide.  If your canary shows nest building behavior in the spring or lays an egg - it is a hen canary and you won't have success with singing.  However, she can be a sweet and enjoyable pet.

Male canaries sing to attract a mate.  If they've got a mate, they don't need to sing -  she's already there!  While acquiring a hen may result in a short burst of canary singing, the male will soon stop canary singing.  A mirror will make the bird think a female is in the vicinity, too, so don’t put a mirror in your canaries cage.

The worst thing you can do to discourage canary singing is to get another male canary. This only causes angst for both male birds.  The birds will feel that they must protect their territory rather than sing to attract a mate.

While every canary has silent periods, during molts or hot summer months, age is also another reason that canaries stop singing.

Don’t Expect Your Bird To Sing During a Molt

Finally, all birds molt their feathers once or twice a year.  Growing new feathers requires a lot of energy and optimum nutrition.   Your bird will use its energy for feather growth rather than trying to attract a mate. Many people get their canary during the winter months after the young bird has been kept in a large breeding facility - possibly an outdoor aviary.

Moving to a new home also results in a lot of stress.  And, stress induces molting and when feathers start falling out you won't have a singing canary. Once a molt has begun, the only thing you can do is wait about 2 months until it is over.

It is important to feed your canary extra protein during molts. Supplement Canary Seed Food with high protein egg food like Gourmet Eggfood.

Finally, male canaries won't sing if they are in pain.  Singing is affected by accidents within the cage, such as flying into cage bars or getting a toenail caught in a toy are painful, yet common accidents.
