Parrot Bird Bath
If you love pet birds, bird bathing is important for both you and your pet birds health. A good parrot bath reduces bird dander and feather debris not only making cleaning up after your pet easier but also reducing allergens in your household.
A parrot bath conditions your birds skin, rinses away dirt, oils and bacterial build up on bird feathers and brings out your birds beautiful colors. While pet dogs need a couple of baths a year, a pet bird must get parrot bath several times a week due to need for excellent hygiene, sensitive skin and proclivity toward feather picking. Even a gram of weight in the form of dirt or oil on your pet birds feathers causes a bird discomfort. Bird bathing removes the dirt.
Small pet birds enjoy bird bathing right inside the cage. Our Lixit Bird Bath provides an excellent bird bathing experience for parakeets, parrotlets, lovebirds, cockatiels and like sized birds.
Medium to large pet birds need a good parrot bath on a regular basis but splashing about in an expensive iron bird cage is not good for the bird cage. Plus, finding a parrot bath for a medium bird is down right impossible. Larger parrots need a bird shower perch or a bird mister.
Some of our customers tell us that their pet bird dislikes a parrot bath. We've got seven beautiful parrots in excellent plumage and we beg to differ! Some pet birds need to be slowly conditioned to enjoy a parrot bath. Wild birds, no matter what species innately know that bird bathing is critical to survival. Why? If a bird has dirty feathers that can't be properly preened they can't fly. Birds must be able to fly to survive.
Parrots learn survival skills from their flock mates and from experience. If your pet is not used to bird bathing it will squawk at a parrot bath! Simple as that! Your bird needs to learn that a parrot bath is a good thing from exposure! Once a parrot learns that bird bathing is a good thing, it will relish in a parrot bath!
So, how do you introduce bird bathing to your parrot? We recommend fine mist bird bathing such as the spray output of the Moto Mister Parrot Bath or Misty Mate Parrot Bath.
Could you imagine being a bird the size of a loaf of bread that isn't used to bird bathing and having a huge drop of water hit you in the face? Or the eye? That would be like someone throwing a glass full of water at you. Not fun! But, a gentle mist is a positive bird bathing experience. Especially since birds from rainforest regions experience a gentle mist for their parrot bath.
Once your parrot is used to a good soaking, a bird shower perch is a good choice.
